    Chair of Modern English Language, Leeds University

    The School of English is seeking to appoint a Chair in Modern English
    Language from 1st January 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter, to
    succeed Professor Katie Wales.

    The School is one of the largest and most successful departments of
    English in the country, with a reputation both for international
    excellence in research (5*A in RAE 2001) and for the high quality of its
    teaching provision ('excellent' in TQA). In keeping with this
    departmental profile, the person appointed will be a distinguished
    international scholar in the field of Modern English Language. The new
    Professor will be expected to make a major contribution to the further
    development of the School's international profile by building upon the
    tradition of research excellence in the subject area both within the
    School and through collaborative links in the University more widely.

    The salary, which is negotiable, will be within the professorial scale
    (minimum 47,380 pa).
