"Using a Corpus in Learning and Teaching English for Academic Purposes"

    Short course, September 6th - 8th, 2004

    Invited Guest Lecturer: Tim Johns

The next short course at Birmingham’s Centre for Corpus Research will
focus on how a corpus can be used to support teaching and learning in
EAP. The course is designed to enable teachers of EAP to design and
build their own corpus of specialised texts, and to exploit it in
teaching and in writing materials. It will also encourage teachers to
explore the implications of research in corpus linguistics for EAP. The
course is open to teachers of any background, but it is particularly
designed for teachers who have not used corpora before. It will combine
lectures and hands-on practical sessions, using the resources of the
University of Birmingham’s Corpus Research Suite.

Lecturers on the course will include: Tim Johns, Susan Hunston, Pernilla
Danielsson, David Oakey, Maggie Charles and Nick Groom. Topics will
include: introducing corpus-based research; designing and building a
corpus; ‘where do I start?’; looking at academic words; looking at
‘grammar’ words; using a corpus in one-to-one consultations.
