    FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS:

    THEME SESSION

"LANGUAGE SYSTEM AND LANGUAGE USE: CORPUS-BASED APPROACHES"

at the Ninth International Cognitive Linguistics Conference
    July 17th-22th, 2005 (Seoul, Korea)

    Dear colleagues,

from 17th till 22nd of July 2005, the Ninth International Cognitive
Linguistics Conference (ICLC-9) will be held at Yonsei University in
    Seoul, Korea.

We are planning to organize a theme session at this conference which
will be concerned with corpus-based approaches to the relationship
between language system and language use. This includes, but is not
limited to, questions such as the following:
    - How does the system influence usage (thinking for speaking)?
    - How does usage influence the system (e.g. in acquisition and diachrony)?
    - How do we derive facts about the system from usage data?

We invite abstracts from researchers in all areas of cognitive
linguistics and related frameworks who are committed to the
systematic quantitative analysis of naturally occurring language on
    the basis of corpora.

Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words, specifying research
questions, method, data and (expected) results. Abstracts should be
submitted electronically (RTF or PDF format) to Anatol Stefanowitsch
    (stefanowitsch@uni-bremen.de) and Stefan Th. Gries
(stgries@sitkom.sdu.dk), and should reach us no later than August
15th. Authors will be notified by September 15th whether their
abstracts have been selected for the theme session. The theme session
proposal will then be submitted to the organizers of the ICLC-9, who
will notify us of acceptance or rejection by January 15th.

For further information about the conference, visit http://www.iclc2005.org.

    Best regards,
Stefan Th. Gries (Southern Denmark University)
    Anatol Stefanowitsch (University of Bremen)
