Special attention will be given to candidatures of experts from accession and candidate countries associated to the EU RTD Framework Programme, namely: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey.

The specific call for the field of Language Technology can be found at http://www.jrc.cec.eu.int/enlargement/action2004/ipsc-j09.doc. Possible tasks depend on the profile of the applicants, but will most likely involve participation in current research projects, including the adaptation of existing text mining tools to further languages.

The JRC’s Language Technology group specialises in multilingual and cross-lingual text analysis applications, making use of multilingual thesauri and nomenclatures, and using mainly statistical and Machine Learning techniques. The JRC is situated in Ispra, in Northern Italy, about one hour West of the city of Milan. Its 1700 international staff work in a multi-disciplinary and multilingual environment.

Indicative duration of the stay is 6 to 12 months. Condition for Detached National Experts is that they are temporarily detached from their home organisation (ministries, national research centres, universities, companies, etc.). They receive a 105 Euro per day supplement to their home salary (figure to be updated soon). For exact conditions, see the link to ‘Detached National Experts’ on the web site http://www.jrc.it/enlargement/action2004/ic-call.htm.

Interested persons should send their CV together with a list of publications and the application form to ipsc@jrc.it before 28 May 2004. The submitted applications will be evaluated and a reply will be sent to the applicants by September 2004. A reserve list of successful candidates will be set up, which will be filled by the JRC according to the future availability. The constitution of such a list does not present any commitment for future employment by the European Commission.
