Certain lexical units are perceived as preconstructed unities, prefabricated strings, some of which are completely fixed (like pomme de terre ) ou semi-fixed (such as: fort comme un turc or prêter attention). Often called collocations, these semi-fixed expressions, unlike their fixed counterparts that have been studied for several years now, constitute a real problem in linguistics and applied linguistics. Although, in France, studies on phraseology have multiplied over the past few years, collocations in France have not benefited from the same interest shown them in the Anglo-saxon world. One of the aims of this study, result of a symposium held in Grenoble in 2001, is to contribute to a better understanding of this often undervalued problem.
In this study, after some precisions on the notion of collocation, ways are proposed for the processing of collocations on the basis of the model that seems to be best suited for the purpose, which is that of the Lexical Functions, as applied in the Dictionnaire Explicatif et Combinatoire by Mel'çuk and his colleagues. Finally, some thought is given to the motivation of these lexical unities, which is central from a linguistic viewpoint.
