One point of reference is telephone companies (thanks to Yorick Wilks
for pointing it out). It was established in the early part of the last
century that telephone companies were not liable for material passing
through their wires or exchanges. It would be most desirable to have a
similar ruling for web search engines and ISPs (which would probably
then also cover some web-based 'linguistic corpora').

(Several years ago, the President of a leading UK Internet provider was
pilloried in the national press for the company's computers having
paedophilia on them. This probably seems preposterous to most readers
of this list - but it happened.)
