As part of the CLEF cross language evaluation forum, a collection of just
under 30,000 images each with a text caption (approx. 44 words) is now
available, a set of queries translated into a range of languages will be
released in the next month to allow researchers to explore both monolingual
and cross language image retrieval. Although Cross Language Image Retrieval
by text caption has been much discussed, little research has been conducted
on this topic; we hope this collection will facilitate such research. The
images are a set of mainly monochrome photographs (368x234) taken from St.
Andrews University's collection of Scottish photographers.

Those interested in working with the collection should contact Carol Peters
(carol@iei.pi.cnr.it) to sign the necessary copyright agreement form so the
collection can be released to them.

As with all test collection exercises, we encourage participation to help
us form relevance judgements from a pool of submitted runs. The dates of
data release and run submission will follow those of CLEF (see URL below).
If a sufficient number of researchers contribute runs, we hope to provide a
forum for this research to be discussed at the CLEF meeting at ECDL 2003.
