    Evaluation in Academic Discourse

    14, 15, 16 June 2003

Certosa di Pontignano, University of Siena

The research group comprising researchers from the universities of Modena, Siena, Florence, and Lecce invites submission of papers for the forthcoming conference on Evaluation in Academic Discourse.

The conference will be held in the 14th century monastery, the Certosa di Pontignano, situated a few kilometres outside of Siena in the Chianti hills. This is an idyllic setting for a conference, eminently suitable for reflection and the exchange of ideas. The Certosa is surrounded by wonderful walking country - vineyards and olive groves - and in fact produces its own wine and oil. Information on the history, location etc. of the conference venue can be found on the website http://www.unisi.it/servizi/certosa/.

    Possible conference themes are:

a.. The role of specialised corpora in research on academic discourse
      b.. Evaluation and metadiscourse
c.. Variation according to discipline, genre, audience and culture
      d.. Evaluation and discourse structure
      e.. Evaluation according to register
f.. Implicitness and explicitness in evaluation
g.. Evaluation, discourse community and interaction
h.. Evaluation across time and space

There will be three sessions dealing with the following aspects of evaluation in academic discourse:

      a.. Written academic discourse
b.. Diachronic perspectives on academic discourse
      c.. Spoken academic discourse

Each half-day session will be preceded by an invited 40-minute Plenary and concluded by a-30 minute paper by a Guest Speaker. After each plenary a discussant will raise questions to stimulate reflection on issues emerging from the paper. Other speakers will be given a 20 minute slot for their papers. There will also be the possibility of presenting a poster and a slot on the morning of the 16th will be dedicated to this purpose. The final session will be organised in the form of a round table. Participants and invited speakers will discuss theoretical and methodological issues which emerge from the papers presented in the previous sessions.

Speakers who have accepted to join us include Ken Hyland, John Swales, Ellen Valle, Paul Drew, Susan Hunston, Karin Aimer, Anna Mauranen, Wolfgang Teubert and John Sinclair.

The required format for submissions is an abstract of 800/1000 words outlining the main thrust and conclusions of the paper. The deadline for submissions is 28.2.2003. The outcome of submissions will be notified by 20.3.2003. The final draft must be sent to the discussant by May 15th, 2003. Submissions should indicate the author's full name, affiliation, address, phone number (for urgent contacts only), fax number and of course e-mail address. If possible, abstracts should be in ms/word format and sent as an attachment to mbondi@unimo.it. Submissions can also take the form of a poster proposal. Potential speakers should indicate if they are willing to present a poster if there is insufficient time for all the papers.
