    4 Day Short Course
    in
    Corpus Design and Use

    2 - 5 December 2002
ITRI, University of Brighton, East Sussex, UK

The corpus is crucial to contemporary dictionary-making and lexical
resource development. The quality of a lexical resource depends
critically on the quality of the corpus used for its development.

In this 4-day course we explore the corpus in relation to how well it
represents one or more language varieties and the difficult issues this
raises about the data set we wish to sample from.

At the end of the short course, students will understand how a corpus
collection strategy may be developed and implemented and what
information should be included in the header of each document in the corpus.

    Content

        * Lexicographic evidence before the corpus
        * Issues in corpus design: size, representativeness etc
        * Collecting corpus text: sources, copyright issues, text formats,
          data capture
        * Text type information and its use in lexicography
        * Corpus-query programs: available and upcoming software
        * Methods and measures for comparing corpora

Places are limited and early registration is recommended.
