    Academic-related Research Staff Grade 1a
    (salary in the range £18,265-27,339)

The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature

The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature is based at Oxford
University under the direction of Dr Jeremy Black. Since 2001 the
Arts and Humanities Research Board has provided substantial funding
for a major research project on corpus-based analysis of Sumerian
focusing on the study of style, lexis, grammar and register.

Applications are invited for one full-time postdoctoral research
position for three years. The requirements are a PhD
either in cuneiform studies, ideally specialising in Sumerian language
    and/or literature,
*or in some aspect of corpus linguistics, ideally with experience of a
    non-Indo-European language.*

All candidates will need to demonstrate experience of and facility in
using computers for language-based research, and a willingness to
work as part of a team. A knowledge of XML is desirable but not
    essential.

Further particulars and details of how to apply are available at the
    ETCSL website <http://www-etcsl.orient.ox.ac.uk>. Letters of
application, with curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of two
referees, are requested immediately, with a view to starting on 1st
January 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter. The closing date for
    applications is 1st November 2002.

Formal interviews will not be held but applicants may contact Dr
Black <jeremy.black@orinst.ox.ac.uk> direct for further information
    about the post.
