The best software tool I know about for manipulation, storage and
retrieval of linguistic data in text format is an Apple application
called HyperCard. It has its own scripting language that allows
almost unlimited possibilities for text manipulation, it is very
powerful (unless you need colour), and it is really easy to learn.
There are several articles about HyperCard in linguistic Journals or
books intended for the linguists [[1]]. The problem is that, although
HyperCard is still sold by Apple, its development has been
discontinued by the company. Moreover, it is not Unicode compatible.
An alternative may be Revolution <http://www.runrev.com/>, a very
powerful developer's tool (more powerful than HyperCard, in general,
but I don't know if its text manipulation abilities are just as
good). Revolution can be used in most platforms.
