To add my bit of statistics:

In about 170 million words of running text of 7 British and American
newspapers (full editorial content of the 1999 editions),
pronounciation occurs

- 4 times in the London Times (35.4 million words)
- once in the Daily Mail (21.7 million words)
- once in the Sunday Times (17.2 million words)

It doesn't occur at all in the American newspapers (Boston Globe, LA
Times, and USA Today) and also not in the British Mail on Sunday (6.1
million words).

Oh yes, and it's found once in the BNC - in a text from the arts
section of the Guardian. ;-)
