Assistant Professorship in Applied Natural Language Processing

The Language and Inference Technology (LIT) group at the Institute for
Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) invites applications for a new
tenure track position at the assistant professor level. Candidates from
all areas of applied natural language processing will be considered, but
preference may be given to candidates with expertise in information
retrieval or large-scale evaluation exercises and their statistical
    underpinnings.

Faculty duties include undergraduate teaching in the computer science,
artificial intelligence and information science programs, as well as
courses in information retrieval and natural language processing.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, a demonstrated
record of excellence in research, and a strong commitment to teaching.

The salary will be between 2056 Euros and 4325 Euros, gross per month.
Knowledge of Dutch is not a prerequisite, but candidates are expected to
master the Dutch language to a sufficient degree to be able to teach in
Dutch within two years after being hired. The starting date is September
1, 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research within the LIT group is centered around the foundations and
applications of inference and language processing systems, with a strong
emphasis on the evaluation of algorithms and methods, both theoretically
and experimentally. Current research interests in the group range from
automated reasoning, constraint programming, satisfability checking, and
formal verification to digital libraries, information retrieval, parsing
technologies, computational syntax and semantics, question answering and
knowledge engineering. The group is strongly internationally oriented,
and currently consists of nearly 25 people. More information about the
LIT group and its members can be found at http://www.illc.uva.nl/LIT.

Anyone interested in this position is invited to contact Maarten de
    Rijke at mdr@science.uva.nl or +31 20 525 5358.

Applicants should submit an application letter together with a full
    resume to:

    Mrs A. Crajé
    Personnel Department
    Universiteit van Amsterdam
