Two PhD Positions and one Postdoc Position
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Institute for Logic, Language and Computation
Cognitive Systems and Information Processing group
    University of Amsterdam

Two PhD Positions and one Postdoc Position

Project "Towards a Unifying Model for Linguistic, Musical and Visual
    Processing"

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the
    University
of Amsterdam is searching for highly motivated candidates for two fully
funded four-year PhD positions and one two-year Postdoc position, in the

    following research areas:

o Postdoc position in linguistic processing

o PhD position in musical processing

o PhD position in visual processing

The positions are funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research as part of the Innovation-Impulse project "Towards a Unifying
Model for Linguistic, Musical and Visual Processing", which aims at the
development of a unifying computational model for processing text, sound

and image. Acknowledging the differences between linguistic, musical and

visual information, the project searches for the underlying mechanisms
which govern the perceptual organization of information in general. In
doing this, its main points of departure are "Structural Information
Theory" (which emphasizes the role of regularities in input patterns),
    and
"Data Oriented Parsing" (which emphasizes the role of past experiences).

Candidates for these positions should have a strong interest in the
development and evaluation of theoretical models of linguistic, musical
or visual processing. Candidates with multi-disciplinary interests or
background are especially invited to apply, including (but not limited
    to)
candidates with a degree in artificial intelligence, computer science,
psychology, musicology, computational linguistics or new media.
Programming skills are required. Familiarity with current trends in
cognitive science and multimedia is a definitive advantage.

Candidates for the Postdoc position should hold a PhD in a relevant
    area,
and candidates for the PhD positions should have a first degree (Master,

Doctorandus, or equivalent) in a relevant area. Knowledge of Dutch is
    not
a prerequisite and candidates can be of any nationality. Candidates may
    be
asked to assist with courses related to their research areas. The salary

for the PhD positions will range from 3159 Guilders (during the first
year) to 4511 Guilders (during the fourth year), gross per month. For
    the
Postdoc position, the salary will be between 5416 Guilders and 7128
Guilders, gross per month (depending on previous job experience). The
project is internationally oriented, and has a generous equipment and
travel budget. The starting date for all positions should be between
    September 1, 2001 and January 1, 2002.

Applicants should submit a full resume including a statement of research

interests, and the names and email addresses of at least two references
    to
    vision@illc.uva.nl by July 31, 2001.

Research interests within the Cognitive Systems and Information
    Processing
group at the ILLC range from automated reasoning, natural language
processing, computational musicology and visual perception to multimedia

information processing. This project will be carried out in
    collaboration
with the New Media group at the University of Amsterdam.
