    You can press <Ctrl>+<'> (that's the apostrophe symbol) followed by a vowel
    letter for the rising accent (accent aigu), as in éáíóú

    You can press <Ctrl>+ <`> (that's the key left of number one) followed by a
    vowel letter for the falling accent (accent grave), as in àèìòù

    You can press <Ctrol> + <:> (that's the colon, so you need to press <Shift>
    as well) followed by a vowel letter for the diaeresis or umlaut, as in äëïöü

    And finally, you can press <Ctrl> + <^> (that's the caret - <Chift>+<6>)
    followed by a vowel letter for the circumflex, as in âêîôû

    It's worked pretty well for me.
