Steve Finch thinks that stress is involved in the choice of who/whom,
and he may well be right, but his intuitions do not consistently jibe
with mine. I doubt anyone pronounces Hemingway's novel _For whom the
bell tolls_ WITHOUT stress on 'whom', if for no other reason than for
metrical ones. By the way, if Hemingway were alive to write the sequel,
it would surely be _Who the bell tolls for_ (but whom are I to tell H.
how to write?)
