I'm not going to get involved in this discussion, but let me point out
that, as usual, there will be an opportunity for industry folks to
demonstrate their technology for the computational linguistics
community at the ACL'99 conference this summer. I would encourage
anyone making claims for the superiority of their technology over
someone else's to arrange for a demo, where their target audience can
have an opportunity to try out the system for themselves -- which
seems particularly appropriate if technical details are not available
to the research community in order to permit replication of the
methods employed by the system. ACL'99 is here at the University of
Maryland in June, and if anyone is not sure how to arrange a demo, I
will be happy to help put you in contact with the right people. For
conference information see http://www.mri.mq.edu.au/conf/acl99/.
