Research Studentships (2)

at Essex
for 1998-2001

The Department of Language and Linguistics has two research
studentships available for the period 1998-2001. Both cover fees at
UK/EU rates, the first provides a full bursary, the second a partial
bursary.

Fees and Bursary PhD studentship (3 years)
------------------------------------------

Applications are invited from students anywhere in the world to pursue
doctoral research for up to three years. UK/European Union rate fees
will be paid by the University, and students will receive a bursary
from the department at research council rates. Non-UK/European Union
students will be liable for the reminder of the fees (current fee
difference is UKL 3,770). The value of the bursary is currently UKL
5,295 (subject to review). Holders of the bursary will be expected to
provide up to 6 hours of teaching per week or the equivalent
(e.g. research assistant duties).

Fees-and-Part Bursary PhD studentship (3 years)
-----------------------------------------------

Applications are invited from students anywhere in the world to pursue
doctoral research for up to three years. UK/European Union rate fees

Students applying for either studentship should have a good first
degree (normally at least an Upper Second Class Honours or
equivalent), and be willing to investigate a topic compatible with the
research priorities of the department. Applications are particularly
welcome in the fields of language acquisition theory (first/second),
syntax, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguis-

discouraged from offering topics in other areas of linguistics.

Closing date: 31 March 1998

Applicants must have already applied for, and been offered a normal
place for doctoral study in the department before this closing date.

The department is a major centre for teaching and research in Theore-
