ESSLI - 98 Workshop on

LOGIC AND PRAGMATICS

August 24 - 28, 1998

The workshop is held as part of the
10th European Summer School in Logic,Language and Information
(ESSLI - 98).
August 17-28, 1998. Saarbrueken, Germany

** FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS **

Organizer: Jens Allwood (Dept of Linguistics, Göteborg University, Sweden)

Web page: http://www.ling.gu.se/~jens/logprag.html

BACKGROUND:
Logic has been applied to pragmatics at least since the 1950:s. Among the
first attempts were Richard Martin's formalization of epistemic notions and
Yehoshua Bar Hillel's discussion of the logical nature of deixis. Other
well known efforts are Searle's and Vanderveken's formalization of the
semantics of speech act terms.

Contributions of logic to pragmatics have also been made under rubric of
semantics. For example, what Richard Montague called pragmatics
(formalization of tense and modality) has by many others been called
semantics.

Without worrying too much about such at least partly terminological issues,
the workshop will concentrate on the use of logic to formalize and
understand such areas as
1.Dialog analysis, for example, in the context of NLP systems
2.Contextual determination of meaning
3.The use of logic in corpus based analysis of language.
However, a discussion of other uses of logic in pragmatics is also warmly
welcome.

WORKSHOP AIMS
The workshop aims to
- provide a setting for PhD students and other researchers to present
and discuss their work
- facilitate the exchange of ideas between researchers working in
different areas of logic and pragmatics

CALL FOR PAPERS:
All researchers in the area, but especially PhD students are invited to
submit short papers (between 4 and 8 pages long) describing their
thesis/research topic, approach and results. Talks will be 20 or 45 minutes
long, with 10 - 15 minutes for discussion/questions. Authors are also
encouraged to submit a list of topics they would like to see discussed at
the workshop. This will help to identify issues for discussion and debate.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: February 15, 1998
Paper submissions should be sent to:

Prof. Jens Allwood
Dept of Linguistics
University of Göteborg
412 98 Goeteborg

Electronic submission is also welcomed. In this case submissions should be
in the form of either PostScript or self-contained LaTex and sent to:
jens.allwood@ling.gu.se

Authors of accepted papers will be notified by April 15th 1998. The
deadline for receipt of revised papers to appear in the workshop
proceedings is May 15th 1998.

WORKSHOP FORMAT:
The workshop will consist of five sessions of 90 minutes each held over
five days. There will be either two or three presentations at each session
with time for questions and discussion.
