RESEARCH POST IN BIOINFORMATICS/NATURAL LANGUAGE ENGINEERING

'Use of Text Extraction Methods to Create a Database of Protein Active Sites'

A research post funded by the UK joint BBSRC/EPSRC BioInformatics initiative
is available for 36 months from March 1998 for a project to be jointly
undertaken by the above-named departments. The work will be carried out
within the Natural Language Processing (NLP) research group in the Department
of Computer Science. The candidate will be involved in applying and extending
NLP techniques to extract information from electronic abstracts and journal
papers in order to facilitate protein structure analyis. In particular, the
work will aim at automatically processing free text sources to construct a
database of information concerning the roles of amino acid residues in protein
structures in the Protein Data Bank. The candidate should have a strong
background in computational linguistics or artificial intelligence, including
good programming skills, and should have a PhD or equivalent research
experience in a relevant area. Some knowledge of biochemistry would be
desirable.

Salary in the range GBP 15,159 - 22,785 pa, according to experience.
