Summer Scholarships in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence
(Digital Audio, Computer Music, Language Learning, Robot Worlds)

Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
Department of Computer Science
The Flinders University of South Australia

Applications are invited from students with good programming skills to work on
a research project in digital audio and computer music or a research project on
learning natural language (syntax/grammar and robot world ontology/semantics).

The projects will be conducted in the Computer Science Department at
Flinders University of South Australia over the summer break (Dec97-Feb98).
Precise dates are subject to negotiation. The expected duration of the project
would be 8 to 10 weeks, with the total stipend for a student varying between
$2000 and $4000 depending on qualifications and duration. Overseas candidates
are welcome to apply and proposals for a different time period will be
considered.

The positions ideally suit students who are completing 3rd or 4th year and
plan to continue on to honours or postgraduate study. Preference will be
given to students interested in continuing their studies in this area at
Flinders. A distinction-level average in relevant coursework is expected,
and students may request to be considered for entry into our Honours program.

Knowledge or interest in any of the following would be an advantage, but is not
essential:

-- digital audio
-- digital signal processing
-- music
-- acoustics
-- perception
-- Matlab
-- robotics
-- vision/image processing
-- speech processing
-- natural language
-- machine learning
-- linguistics
-- psycholinguistics
-- information theory
-- statistics

Applications should be sent electronically (PostScript or plain text only)
