Dear corpora list subscribers,

The MITRE Corporation Natural Language Processing group is making
available to the language processing community the Alembic Workbench
corpus annotation and development tool via the World Wide Web. The
Alembic Workbench provides a graphical user interface for annotating
multi-lingual text documents with user-specified annotations in the
form of SGML markup. The Workbench presently supports a number of
special purpose annotation types (such as linked annotations, uniquely
identified tags, comment annotations, etc.) and user interactions to
ease their manual specification. The Workbench has been developed as
part of a project to accelerate the rate at which annotated corpora
and corpus-based language processing systems can be constructed. The
current version is being used by various research groups to add
annotations ranging from word segmentation, to multi-word phrasal
markup, to discourse-level annotations. The development of this
software is continuing, and will likely grow to incorporate special
purpose interfaces for "dense" tagging (such as part of speech tags),
and "relation" tagging (such as multi-part, inter-sentential event
tagging).

At this time the software is being made available for free under
the terms of a General Public License agreement. For more information
about the Alembic Workbench and how to obtain a copy, please consult
the URL below, or contact one of the members of the development team.
