Research Assistant PSET Project
School of Computing and Information Systems
University of Sunderland
U.K.

The School of Computing and Information Systems has an exciting
opportunity for a Research Assistant to work on a project sponsored
by the U.K. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and
Apple Computer, to build a system to simplify text for aphasic readers.

Aphasics have lost some of their ability to understand (or produce)
speech or text typically as a result of head injury or a stroke. The
system will take in newspaper text and produce a simplified equivalent
form by, for example, using more common words and easier grammar.

The successful applicant will have a good first degree or masters in
Computational Linguistics, Computing, Linguistics, Psychology or a
related topic. They will work closely with an experienced post-
doctoral fellow at Sunderland to implement and evaluate the system,
and with a team at Sussex University who will supply parts of the
software. There are opportunities for international travel and to
register for a research degree on a part-time basis.

The Natural Language Engineering Group at the University have
recently obtained membership of the European Language and Speech
Network (ELSNET), an EU sponsored Network of Excellence. There
are over 70 research staff and students in the School, and
over 50 academic staff, housed in a new building of
exceptional architectural merit.

10 019 - 13 871 UK pounds depending on age and experience
Fixed Term for 33 months from approximately 6 October 97 - 5 July
2000
