TERMINOLOGY WORKSHOP/CONFERENCE

The Institute for Applied Linguistics at Kent State University
announces it's 1997 Terminology Workshop/Conference to be held at Kent
State University June 20-23 in Kent, Ohio, USA. The workshop is
designed to familiarize participants with the fundamentals of
terminology manage- ment, particularly in translation-oriented
environments. Lectures and discussions will cover a range of topics:

* The basic theory of terminology
* Concept systems and classification
* Term selection and formation
* Descriptive documentation (definition selection and writing;
contexts) * Terminology and lexicography * Cost/benefit analysis in
terminology management * Quality assurance in terminology *
Terminology management for quality assurance * Terminology management
and project planning in enterprises * International trends and
cooperation in terminology management * Terminology activities in
national and international standardization * Copyright issues in
terminology * Translation-oriented terminology management * Computer
support for terminology management * Data modeling in terminology
database management systems * Internet and WWW support for terminology
management * Software localization and terminology management * SGML
and terminology interchange formats * Information management aspects
of terminology management * Information retrieval
* Documentary languages
* Thesauri
* Language policy and terminology planning
* Terminology training

The language of the conference will be English. The workshop format
will consist of both lecture/discussion sessions and hands-on computer
sessions in the IAL's state-of-the-art computer labs. Participants
will have the option of working in MultiTerm=D6 or MTX/TERMEX=D6 with
direct access to online resources via the WWW. Participants working
with different PC-based programs, in non-PC environments, and with
non-standard European character sets are urged to coordinate with the
organiz- ers to discuss appropriate computer support.

Workshop fee: $ 75 registration fee, plus $375 due at the workshop.
($65 refundable up to three weeks prior to the workshop) Costs covered
in the workshop fee: * Lodging for four nights (June 19-22)

* Afternoon refreshments
* Basic workshop materials

Not covered:
* Meal costs, est. at $30/day

The KSU/IAL workshop/conference is an official activity of the
International Institute for Terminology Research (IITF). The KSU/IAL
is an insitutional member of the American Translators Association
(ATA) and of TermNet (The International Network for Terminology).
