Recently I wrote a perl5 library for the purpose of recovery of
transliterated names. I tried it out on a large corpus, searching for
romanized Cyrillic names, and it works very well. An example is given below
(the library is publicly available, mail me if you are interested).
For this particular case (Cyrillic to Roman), I used several schemes,
including those in use for English, French, and German. I would like to know
about transliteration tables for Cyrillic which are in use in other languages,
for example Spanish, Portugese, and Italian.
The second question is more general. Does anybody know about transliteration
schemes for other source languages/alphabets? For example, other slavic
languages, Cyrillic variants, Arabic, India, Oriental languages, etc. Does
anybody have an overview or even a description of what the situation is in any
such other case? -- What alphabet is used, the role of diacritics and accents
etc.. See e.g. the following (I presume) transliterations.
