Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

British Association for Applied Linguistics
announces its
30th Annual Meeting
at the
University of Birmingham
11-13 September 1997

Conference theme:

Language at Work

Keynote Speakers:
Jim Martin, University of Sydney
Greg Myers, University of Lancaster
Susan Bassnett, University of Warwick
and
Malcolm Coulthard, University of Birmingham (The Pit Corder Lecture)

Call for Papers
Proposals for papers are invited on any aspect of applied linguistics, but in
particular those related to the specific theme and sub-themes of the
conference, which are as follows:

(1) taught language and working language
--What is the relation between language encountered in teaching and in non-
teaching situations? How can the language classroom influence learners'
language use?

(2) language and institutions
--What is the relation between language and institutions: their ideology,
influence, construction and maintenance?

(3) translation studies across cultures
--What challenges are posed when a piece of language produced in the
context of one culture is re-produced in the context of another?

(4) language investigation and language teaching
--How can studies of language influence language teaching?

As well as the more usual papers, BAAL also welcomes proposals for:
. colloquia: sets of 3 or 4 related papers submitted jointly
. work-in-progress reports: reports on the early stages of projects (may be
linked to poster presentations)
. poster presentations (these may be accepted after the abstracts deadline)

Send four copies of abstracts to the Meetings Secretary, Meriel Bloor, CELTE,
University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK
Abstracts should be 200 words long; only one copy should carry the
author's name and affiliation.
DEADLINE for receipt of abstracts: 31 March 1997.

British Sign Language interpreting available on request

All inclusive conference fee (includes registration, meals, 2 nights'
accommodation: stlg170 (early bird discount, paid before 4 July: stlg160).
