Frequency Lists

Can anyone point us in the direction of "balanced" frequency
lists, that is, lists which could be considered to contain
the most frequent words in English in general. We realize that
some people do not believe that a "balanced" list exists, that
there is not really any set of English words that could be
considered the core of the language, and we respect this view.
However, we would still like to know the location of the best
"balanced" or "adjusted" lists which might reflect such a core
group of words.

Thank You
We have already downloaded the lists derived from the British National
Corpus and find them quite useful, although we would like to know if there
are others in order to make comparisons. We have also acquired a 3,000
word list from Cobuild.
