I strongly recommend (*) you take heed of

Jenny Thomas and Mick Short (eds), "Using Corpora for Language Research:
Studies in the Honour of Geoffrey Leech", Longman, Harlow. 1996.
(paperback or hardback)

This includes a chapter by Geoffrey Sampson, "From central embedding to
corpus linguistics", full of empirical evidence that centre embedding
is not absent from the real-life use of language.

Hopefully, anyone on the CORPORA mailing list responding to Rob Freeman's
request for "other similar 'arbitrary' restrictions" might also provide
some Corpus citations of exceptions that break these restrictions!

Eric Atwell

PS I have to confess: (*) Geoff Leech's 60th Birthday Festschrift also
includes a chapter I contributed, on research he indirectly inspired at Leeds...
