Seeking Ace Production-Oriented Software Engineer

For Two- to Three-Year Job In Kyoto, Japan

Telecommunications Research Laboratory

ATR in Kyoto, Japan is looking for a talented, experienced, and highly
motivated software management specialist who is interested in coming
to Japan and joining a state-of-the-art research project in
statistical natural language processing. The ultimate goal of the
project is speech-to-speech Japanese to English and English to
Japanese translation. The immediate goal for the next few years is to
produce a natural language parsing system based on statistical machine
learning algorithms. The specialization and expertise of the person
we are looking for should be in software management.

We are looking for someone with several years experience in a
production-oriented
(as opposed to academic) UNIX/C++ environment. We require someone with
software management skills including:
documenting (user-level and developer-level);
conducting code reviews with developers;
maintaining (instituting a formal bug report process,
responding to bug reports, and
keeping documentation up-to-date);
designing and maintaining revision control;
building, using, and evaluating test suites.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with making the transition
between research code and production code. He/She will also be able to
balance the need for flexibility on the part of researchers with the
need for formality in software management.

We have in mind a computer scientist who has at least a Bachelor's
degree (preferably a Master's) in computer science. Experience with
statistical modelling and machine learning techniques is a plus,
though not at all a necessity. Motif experience would also be an
asset, although again it is not required.

Salary and conditions highly competitive.

Please send cover letter, cv, and at least 3 contactable references
(covering programming experience and abilities, and work attitiudes,
etc.) to: Ezra Black (black@itl.atr.co.jp). Thank you.
