Job Description for a Post in the Research and Development Unit for
English Studies, University of Liverpool

A vacancy has arisen in the Unit for a computer scientist with natural
language programming skills. A computational linguist with the
requisite proficiency in programming will also be considered, although
it must be understood that the post chiefly entails programming. The
starting date will be as soon as possible, and the post will, in the
first instance, run until the end of March, 1997. The post relates
primarily to the main Unit activity for the period, namely a DTI-SERC
funded research project known as ACRONYM, concerned with the automatic
identification of the textual thesaurus, for applications in the area
of large-scale textual database handling. There will also be some
involvement with other aspects of Unit work as required.

The post will be graded at Research Associate RIB level, with a salary
up to 15,796 pounds. The post is industrially funded, but the Research
Associate will be accommodated in the research team at Liverpool, and
have honorary university status.

The Research Associate will work under the supervision of the Research
Fellow responsible for the computing tasks in the Unit, reporting also
to the Director of the Unit.

Skills Required:

- experience of programming in C in a Unix environment is essential

- experience in programming in X is desirable

- familiarity with Unix tools, such as awk , is also desirable
