First International Workshop on Applications of
NATURAL LANGUAGE to DATA BASES

(VERSAILLES, France, June 28-29th 1995)

Presentation :
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers, industrial and
potential users, interested in various applications of natural language in
the database field. The integration of databases and natural language has
been for a long time a marginal topic for which only a few research has
been done. For two decades, consulting databases or getting answers in
natural language remain a long term objective for many users. This is
nowadays an accessible convergent point for which a lot of researchers are
focusing on. This is mainly due to the large progress of research in
natural language and to the development of new storage technologies which
allow large semantic electronic dictionaries.

Each aspect of the life cycle of the information system may be improved by
using natural language techniquest: database design (specification,
integration, conflicts resolution), database querying, paraphrasing of data
models and query anwers, integrity specification and design validation.
Beyond this general use of natural language, different specific
applications such as dictionnaries or automatic indexing are also related
to both domains of natural language and databases. Papers which will be
presented during this workshop cover most of these topics.
